Ok let’s make a few things clear. First, I am sorry for the relative radio silence over the past week or so. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan both block WordPress from their servers so I had to rely on an old work colleague to get our posts up (thanks Valerie). Our Spot tracker conveniently decided to stop working in the middle of the Caspian Sea much to the chagrin of my mother, and furthermore, our one functioning phone stopped functioning (though it is now functioning again).
So, where are we. We are in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The rest of the team is out dancing somewhere and I returned to our guesthouse after meeting a Kyrgyz friend for dinner. I’m sitting in a quaint patio after watching the sun set over 20,000ft snow capped peaks and our school bus is wedged into the gated driveway of our temporary residence. It’s quite endearing. We will head to Kazakhstan tomorrow. Almaty is about 250km from here and then it is another 500km to Semey, which is the next city of any size and near the border with Russia. We will hope to make the drive to Russia in two days and then get to the Mongolian border as soon as possible. It is possible we won’t have internet access again until the finish line but I will try to post when available. Thanks for all your comments and I look forward to keeping you updated as the trip gears up for its mighty conclusion! Below are some pictures from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan so far. The highlight for me was sleeping on top of the bus two nights ago in Kazakhstan in what can only be described as perfect sleeping weather. Seeing snow was nice too.
